Mediterranean Ports Shine in Sustainability and Efficiency Study Results

Recent research published in AIMS Environmental Science has shed light on the competitiveness of hub ports in the Mediterranean compared to those in Northern Europe, focusing on sustainability and efficiency. Led by Samia Bouazza from the Advanced Systems Engineering Laboratory at Ibn Tofail University in Morocco, the study highlights the growing importance of innovation in the face of evolving maritime dynamics, particularly with the rise of mega-ships and shifting global trade patterns.

The analysis involved ten leading international hub ports, assessing their competitiveness through a robust methodological framework known as the Hybrid F-AHP TOPSIS method. This approach allowed the researchers to identify and weigh ten criteria across five categories that define port competitiveness from a shipping liner’s perspective. The study found that handling costs, operational efficiency, and infrastructure are the primary factors determining a port’s competitive edge, with an increasing emphasis on sustainability.

The findings revealed that Tangier Med, Algeciras, and Port Said are currently the top-performing ports in the region, particularly excelling in technical efficiency and maritime costs compared to their Northern European counterparts. Bouazza noted, “The results highlight the critical role of sustainability considerations in enhancing port competitiveness.” This insight is particularly relevant for stakeholders in shipping and logistics, as the demand for sustainable practices continues to grow amid global environmental concerns.

For maritime shippers and port authorities, understanding these dynamics presents significant commercial opportunities. Ports that prioritize sustainability can attract more shipping routes and alliances, as companies increasingly seek to align with eco-friendly practices. Additionally, as the study emphasizes, ports that enhance their operational efficiency and reduce handling costs can significantly improve their market position.

The research not only provides a comprehensive overview of port performance but also identifies strengths and opportunities unique to each hub, particularly in the Southern Mediterranean. This holistic perspective is invaluable for decision-makers in the maritime industry looking to navigate the competitive landscape effectively.

In summary, the strategic analysis conducted by Bouazza and her team underscores the importance of sustainability and efficiency in enhancing port competitiveness. As the global shipping industry continues to evolve, ports that adapt to these trends will likely thrive in the increasingly competitive market.
