In a significant effort to combat the erosion of national character among youth in Indonesia, a new study has unveiled the Welenrengnge Model, aimed at strengthening the MARITIME character among students at SMK Negeri 6 Pangkep Regency in South Sulawesi. This initiative, led by A B. Takko Bandung from Universitas Hasanuddin, emphasizes the importance of instilling values such as integrity, independence, wisdom, and resilience in young individuals.
The research highlights a structured training program that utilizes various methods, including lectures, in-depth discussions, and field practices. These practices incorporate games designed to reinforce the MARITIME character traits, making the learning process both engaging and effective. According to the study, “Practice through games can build wisdom, independence, toughness, and humanity,” showcasing the innovative approach taken to foster these essential values.
The implications of this research extend beyond educational institutions. As Indonesia continues to develop its human capital, strengthening national character among students can lead to a more cohesive society with a strong sense of identity. This is particularly relevant for sectors such as education, youth development programs, and community organizations that focus on character building.
Moreover, businesses and industries that rely on a skilled and ethical workforce may find opportunities to partner with educational institutions to support initiatives like the Welenrengnge Model. By investing in programs that promote national character, companies can enhance their corporate social responsibility profiles while also contributing to the development of a more capable and innovative future workforce.
The findings of this study, published in ‘Dinamisia’ (translated as ‘Dynamics’), underscore the critical role of character education in shaping the next generation of leaders and citizens in Indonesia. As the nation faces various challenges, equipping students with strong moral and ethical foundations will be essential for fostering a resilient society.
