Innovative Method Boosts Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Shipping

In a significant stride towards greener shipping, researchers have unveiled a cutting-edge method aimed at enhancing energy efficiency aboard vessels. Led by Heemoon Kim from the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute in Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, this innovative study focuses on optimizing load control between a ship’s shaft generator and diesel generator. As the maritime sector faces mounting pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, the findings hold promising implications for ship operators and builders alike.

The International Maritime Organization has rolled out stringent regulations to curb emissions, pushing the industry to adopt advanced technologies. This research responds directly to that challenge, proposing a system that minimizes fuel consumption by intelligently managing the load between different power sources on a vessel. By utilizing real-time data from the main engine, diesel generator, and electric power grid, the system effectively balances the energy demands, leading to significant fuel savings.

Kim and his team employed the Lagrange interpolation formula to craft an optimal load-sharing strategy. This mathematical approach allows for more efficient operation of shaft and diesel generators working in tandem, which is crucial given the varying capacities and output characteristics of these systems. The results are compelling: simulations conducted with MATLAB/Simulink indicated an impressive fuel savings of around 1.89% compared to traditional methods. “Our approach not only enhances energy efficiency but also aligns with the industry’s push towards sustainability,” Kim stated.

For the commercial sector, these advancements present a dual opportunity. Shipowners can expect reduced operational costs due to lower fuel consumption, while shipbuilders have a chance to integrate these technologies into new designs, thus attracting environmentally conscious clients.
