Innovative Antenna Design Promises Enhanced Maritime Communications with 5G

A recent study has unveiled an innovative design in the realm of antenna technology that could have significant implications for maritime communications, particularly as the industry gears up for the widespread rollout of 5G networks. Led by Meshari D. Alanazi from the Electrical Engineering Department at Jouf University in Saudi Arabia, this research introduces a compact, wide-band monopole antenna that operates in the millimeter-wave spectrum, specifically between 24 GHz and 38 GHz.

What sets this antenna apart is its circular polarization capability, which is crucial for effective signal transmission in dynamic environments like the open sea. The design employs a unique Mickey Mouse-shaped radiator, paired with a frequency selective surface (FSS) that converts linear polarization to circular polarization. This conversion is achieved through a clever arrangement of dual rectangular strips, enhancing the antenna’s performance in diverse conditions. Alanazi notes, “The suggested antenna is combined with the FSS cells to achieve wide-band operation,” highlighting its potential versatility.
