Teledyne FLIR Defense is making waves in the international defense market with its latest sale of the UltraFORCE 380X-HDc multi-spectral imaging systems to NL EASP AIR, a Dutch provider specializing in special mission support services. This marks a significant milestone as it’s the first time this cutting-edge surveillance gimbal will be deployed outside the United States, opening doors for further international collaborations in defense technology.
NL EASP AIR plans to install the UltraFORCE 380X-HDc on its fleet of three Dornier DO328-110 multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft. This strategic move underlines the growing importance of advanced surveillance technology in modern defense operations. The demand for high-quality imaging systems is surging, especially in Europe, where maritime patrol and search and rescue (SAR) missions are crucial for managing increasing immigration activity at sea. Pieter Voeten, NL EASP AIR Operations CEO and director, emphasized their commitment to providing top-notch surveillance capabilities, stating, “We wanted the best long-range surveillance technology available in today’s market to support European Union member state end-users and other individual EU customers, and we are getting exactly that with Teledyne FLIR Defense.”
The UltraFORCE 380X-HDc is a game-changer. Launched just a few months ago in July, this system boasts high-definition imaging in a compact, low-profile package that is free from International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) restrictions. With its full 1080p resolution, the gimbal is equipped with visual, thermal, low-light, and shortwave infrared cameras, making it a versatile tool for airborne reconnaissance and border patrol operations, both day and night. The continuous zoom feature on electro-optical (EO) sensors, combined with long-range daylight spotting and infrared capabilities, ensures that operators can maintain uninterrupted viewing over extended distances.
Weighing in at 31.3 kg and with a sleek 14.6-inch height profile, the UltraFORCE 380X-HDc is designed for optimal ground clearance in rotary aircraft, proving that you don’t have to sacrifice capability for compactness. Kety Frachey, senior director of FLIR Defense airborne systems-Europe, highlighted the social responsibility tied to this technology. She noted, “Immigration activity at sea is increasing across Europe, and NL EASP AIR serves as a valuable partner to help spot where it’s happening and save lives.” The precision imaging sensors on the UltraFORCE 380X enable operators to swiftly identify and respond to border crossings, directing resources to those at risk—a crucial function in today’s complex geopolitical landscape.
With deliveries to NL EASP AIR expected to be finalized by early 2025, this partnership not only reinforces Teledyne FLIR Defense’s role in the European defense sector but also sets a precedent for future international sales of advanced surveillance systems. The implications of this deal stretch far beyond just equipment; it signals a shift in how defense contractors engage with European nations, emphasizing the need for collaboration in addressing pressing issues like border security and humanitarian crises. As nations grapple with these challenges, the demand for sophisticated surveillance technology will only increase, and Teledyne FLIR Defense is poised to lead the charge in delivering innovative solutions to meet those needs.
