This breakthrough, led by Peiyong Gong from the Marine Electrical Engineering College at Dalian Maritime University in China, promises to revolutionize how ships and unmanned vessels perceive their environment, enhancing situational awareness and collision avoidance.

As Gong puts it, “The WST-SOVF algorithm establishes a spatial orientation vector field between WSTs, where each pixel in the field encodes the spatial orientation angle between two separated WSTs.”

By understanding the spatial relationships between objects, ships can better predict potential collision paths and take evasive action earlier. This is particularly crucial in congested waters or poor visibility conditions.
Moreover, this technology can enhance unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and autonomous ships. These vessels rely heavily on their ability to perceive and understand their environment. As Gong notes, “More complex spatial patterns, potentially involving higher-dimensional spatial relations—such as overlapping, intersection, surrounding and occlusion—constitute the spatial semantic characteristics of objects within an image.”
