William Meikle, a man whose life was a vibrant tapestry of creativity, service, and passion, has left an indelible mark on those who knew him. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1950, Will’s journey took him from the deserts of Arizona to the halls of the Newport Naval Station, where he spent over three decades as a sign painter, leaving his artistic touch on countless projects. His passing on June 23, 2025, at the age of 74, has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community that cherished him.
Will’s artistic talents were evident from a young age. In high school, he designed sets for theater productions and excelled in various art projects, showcasing a creativity that would define his life. But his talents weren’t confined to the canvas or the stage. He was also a standout tennis player, a passion that would stay with him throughout his life. After graduating from Flowing Wells High School in Tucson, Arizona, in 1969, Will was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He served as an MP stockade guard and was honorably discharged in December 1971.
Upon returning to civilian life, Will returned to his roots in Newport. Utilizing the GI Bill, he pursued a degree in Commercial Arts and Graphic Design at Southeastern Massachusetts University, now known as U-Mass Dartmouth. During his studies, he worked various jobs, including a stint at Avid in Middletown. In 1983, he began a civil service position as a laborer at the Newport Naval Station’s public works department. Not long after, he transitioned to the Sign Shop, where he became a familiar and talented figure, leaving his mark on the Newport Naval Base for over 35 years before retiring.
Will’s zest for life was palpable. He had a deep love for music, with a particular fondness for the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and many other artists. His home was a treasure trove of sports and classic horror movie memorabilia, a testament to his eclectic tastes and passions. In retirement, he channeled his artistic abilities into designing unique t-shirts for Teepublic, sharing his creativity with a broader audience. He was also an avid sports fan, following professional tennis, the Red Sox, and the Patriots with unwavering enthusiasm.
William is survived by his son, David Meikle, of Tiverton, and his brother, James E. Meikle Jr. (Leslie), of Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Meikle, and his parents, James Edward Meikle and Hope (Harvey) Meikle.
A celebration of William’s remarkable life will take place on August 7, 2025, from 4-6 PM at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the arts programs in Newport, a fitting tribute to a man who lived a life rich in creativity and passion.
