Sarah Whiteford to Lead OCCC’s Career and Technical Education Expansion

Sarah G. Whiteford is stepping into a pivotal role at Oregon Coast Community College (OCCC), where she’ll shape the future of career and technical education as the new dean of academics. With a background that spans criminology, sociology, and program development, Whiteford brings a unique blend of teaching experience and institutional insight to her new position.

Whiteford’s journey to the Oregon coast is a testament to her adaptability and growth. After years teaching criminology and sociology at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee, she transitioned to Oregon State University’s Ecampus, where she honed her skills in program development and faculty training. “I’m looking forward to helping existing faculty [at OCCC] improve their teaching—and also hiring, training, and working with new faculty,” she said, highlighting her dual focus on refining current programs and building new ones.

Her arrival coincides with a major expansion at OCCC: the construction of the Oregon Coast Advanced Technology & Trades Center. Funded by a bond measure, this facility will house programs in construction, carpentry, maritime technology, welding, and other high-demand trades. Whiteford’s role will be crucial in hiring and training the instructors who will staff these programs, ensuring they’re equipped to deliver top-tier technical education.

But Whiteford isn’t just focused on the classroom. She’s eager to engage with the local community, understanding that OCCC’s strength lies in its partnerships. “I’m excited to get to know people here, this community, and its local partnerships,” she said. “A community college has such strength in community support, especially with providing learning opportunities for students.”

This emphasis on collaboration is key. As maritime and technical industries evolve, community colleges like OCCC must adapt, ensuring their programs align with workforce needs. Whiteford’s experience in both academia and program development positions her well to bridge the gap between education and industry demand.

Her hiring also reflects a broader trend in higher education: the need for faculty who can teach and train others to teach. With the rise of online learning and technical education, institutions are investing in leaders who can develop curriculum, mentor instructors, and ensure quality across diverse programs.

For OCCC, Whiteford’s appointment is a strategic move. As the college expands its technical offerings, her expertise in faculty development and program design will be invaluable. And as she settles into her role, her focus on community engagement and partnerships will help OCCC remain a vital resource for students and local industries alike.

In an era where workforce readiness is paramount, Whiteford’s leadership could set a new standard for how community colleges prepare students for high-tech, high-demand careers.
