NexusOcean Enhances Maritime Connectivity with Starlink

NexusOcean is stepping up its game in maritime connectivity, adding Starlink’s high-speed internet to its tailored European offerings. The move, backed by its long-term partnership with MTN, could reshape how vessels stay connected—even in the most remote corners of the ocean.

The company, a virtual network operator with deep roots in the European maritime market, has spent years fine-tuning hybrid onboard systems that seamlessly switch between networks. Now, with Starlink in its arsenal, NexusOcean is promising faster, more reliable internet for commercial shipping, offshore energy, and yachting sectors. This isn’t just about streaming movies in the crew mess—it’s about bridging critical connectivity gaps for safety, efficiency, and operational resilience.

NexusOcean Managing Director Richard de Wit, a former ship owner himself, knows the stakes. “Starlink is a leading name in the provision of high-speed, reliable connectivity at sea,” he said. “As a former ship owner myself, I fully appreciate just how important this can be in ensuring an efficient operation and a comfortable working environment for the crew.” The company’s hybrid systems, which automatically switch between networks based on location and coverage, are designed to keep vessels online—no matter where they sail.

This isn’t just another reseller deal. NexusOcean’s partnership with MTN, the official Starlink reseller, combines global reach with local expertise. Chloe Hekmati, Senior Vice President Maritime/Enterprise Sales – EMEA at MTN, emphasized the synergy: “Our partnership with NexusOcean combines MTN’s global reach and official Starlink reseller accreditation with NexusOcean’s deep understanding of the European maritime market. Together, we can deliver high-speed, reliable connectivity solutions that empower shipowners and operators to perform at their best—wherever they are in the world.”

But what does this mean for the industry? For one, it signals a shift toward more flexible, hybrid connectivity solutions. As vessels venture into areas with patchy coverage, the ability to switch between networks—whether Starlink, VSAT, or cellular—could become a game-changer. It’s not just about speed; it’s about reliability, redundancy, and reducing operational blind spots.

The move also highlights the growing demand for tailored maritime tech solutions. NexusOcean’s approach—customizing systems for each client—reflects a broader trend in the industry: one-size-fits-all is out, and bespoke is in. This could push other providers to offer more flexible, adaptable solutions, driving innovation in maritime connectivity.

Of course, challenges remain. Starlink’s performance in extreme latitudes, for example, is still a work in progress. And while hybrid systems offer flexibility, they also add complexity—requiring robust cybersecurity and IT support, areas where NexusOcean claims strength. How seamlessly these systems integrate into existing onboard networks will be key.

For now, NexusOcean’s addition of Starlink to its European offerings is a bold step. It’s a bet on the future of maritime connectivity—one where high-speed, reliable internet isn’t a luxury, but a necessity. And if the company’s track record is any indication, it’s a bet worth watching.
