Liaoning’s Marine Fishery Sector: A Deep Dive into Growth and Challenges

In a recent study published in the journal *Haiyang Kaifa yu guanli* (translated to *Ocean Development and Management*), researchers have taken a deep dive into the development of Liaoning’s marine fishery sector. The study, led by HAO Yuwan from the College of Geographical Sciences at Liaoning Normal University, uses a dynamic shift-share analysis method to compare the growth, structure, and competitiveness of Liaoning’s marine fishery departments with those of other coastal regions in China from 2012 to 2022.

So, what’s the big picture? The research reveals that while some areas of Liaoning’s marine fishery are performing well, others are lagging behind. For instance, the study found that the structure of aquatic seedling raising and aquatic product transportation is relatively reasonable and competitive. However, the circulation of mariculture aquatic products and leisure fishery, despite having structural advantages, are not as competitive.

HAO Yuwan points out, “The structural disadvantages of marine fishing and aquatic products processing are obvious and the competitiveness is not strong.” This is a significant finding, as it highlights areas where improvements can be made to boost the overall performance of Liaoning’s marine fishery sector.

The study also identifies several key issues that need to be addressed. These include low per unit yield of mariculture, an unreasonable variety structure, weak sustainability of offshore fishing, and low pelagic fishing quantity. To tackle these challenges, the research suggests promoting healthy farming modes, optimizing the structure of aquatic products, appropriately developing offshore fishing, and enhancing pelagic fishing capacity.

From a commercial perspective, these findings present both challenges and opportunities for maritime sectors. Companies involved in marine fishing and aquatic product processing may need to innovate and adapt to improve their competitiveness. On the other hand, the study’s recommendations could open up new avenues for growth and investment in areas like offshore fishing and pelagic fishing.

HAO Yuwan’s research serves as a valuable guide for policymakers and industry stakeholders looking to steer Liaoning’s marine fishery sector towards high-quality development. As the region strives to build a maritime power, understanding and addressing these issues will be crucial for sustainable growth and success.

In the words of HAO Yuwan, “It is suggested to adopt measures such as promoting healthy farming mode, optimizing the structure of aquatic products, appropriately developing offshore fishing and enhancing pelagic fishing capacity, so as to achieve high-quality development of Liaoning marine fishery.” This study, published in *Haiyang Kaifa yu guanli*, provides a solid foundation for these efforts, offering insights and recommendations that could shape the future of Liaoning’s marine fishery sector.
