AI Revolutionizes Eggshell Color Classification for Maritime Poultry Trade

Atwa, a researcher from the College of Biosystems Engineering and Food Sciences at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, has developed a cutting-edge approach to classify eggshell colors with remarkable accuracy. Published in the IEEE Access journal, his study leverages deep learning and genetic algorithms to revolutionize eggshell color classification, a critical factor in the poultry food industry.

Atwa’s research addresses the inefficiencies and inaccuracies of traditional classification methods, such as manual inspection and spectrometry. By employing an attention-enhanced MobileNetV2 model, optimized through a genetic algorithm, he achieved a perfect 100% classification accuracy on a dataset of 2,483 egg images across three classes: brown, platform, and white. The MobileNetV2 model, known for its efficiency and effectiveness in image classification tasks, was fine-tuned with 90 frozen layers, dual attention modules, and a dropout rate of 0.254.
