Phoenix Recovers Aircraft from South China Sea Depths

In a remarkable display of maritime expertise and precision, Phoenix International (Phoenix) has successfully recovered an MH-60R helicopter and an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter aircraft from the depths of the South China Sea. The operation, conducted in collaboration with the Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV), underscores the critical role of advanced technology and skilled personnel in maritime recovery missions.

The aircraft went down within 30 minutes of each other during routine flight operations off the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) on October 26, 2025. Fortunately, all crew members survived and were rescued, but the challenge of retrieving the aircraft from the ocean floor remained. Phoenix personnel swiftly mobilized, traveling to Singapore to deploy search and recovery assets. An Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessel of opportunity (VOO) was equipped with search assets, while a Construction Support Vessel (CSV) VOO was prepared for recovery operations.

Upon arrival at the site, Phoenix teams rapidly located both aircraft using towed pinger locator technology and side scan sonar. The precision of these tools was instrumental in pinpointing the exact locations of the submerged aircraft. Once located, the SUPSALV Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) HYDROS was deployed to conduct the recovery. This advanced ROV, equipped with state-of-the-art capabilities, played a pivotal role in the operation.

Working tirelessly around the clock, the Phoenix team faced significant challenges, including high currents and undersea obstacles. Despite these hurdles, they successfully installed rigging to each aircraft. The meticulous planning and execution of the recovery process were evident as both aircraft were brought to the surface on December 5, 2025, and safely placed on deck aboard the VOO.

This successful recovery mission highlights the importance of advanced maritime technology and the expertise of specialized teams in handling complex underwater operations. The use of towed pinger locator technology, side scan sonar, and ROVs demonstrates how modern tools can overcome the challenges posed by deep-sea environments. The collaboration between Phoenix and NAVSEA SUPSALV also underscores the value of partnerships in achieving successful outcomes in maritime salvage operations.

As the maritime industry continues to evolve, the lessons learned from this mission will undoubtedly shape future developments in underwater recovery techniques and technologies. The successful retrieval of the MH-60R helicopter and F/A-18F Super Hornet serves as a testament to the capabilities of modern maritime salvage operations and the dedication of the teams involved.
