The Baltic Sea is under scrutiny once again as an undersea telecoms cable was damaged near Liepaja, Latvia, on Friday. Latvian investigators have boarded a ship in connection with the incident, according to a statement from the country’s state police. The region has been on high alert since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with a series of power cable, telecom link, and gas pipeline outages raising concerns about sabotage.
The damaged cable runs from Sventoji in Lithuania to Liepaja in Latvia, a distance of approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles). The cause of the damage remains unclear, according to Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre. Latvian police stated on X, “At this time, neither the vessel nor its crew is detained, they are cooperating with the police, and active work continues to clarify the circumstances.”
Latvia’s Prime Minister Evika Silina reassured the public that the incident had not affected Latvian communications users. She wrote on X, “The damage occurred near Liepaja.”
This incident comes just five days after Finnish police seized a cargo vessel en route from Russia to Israel on suspicion of sabotaging an undersea telecoms cable running from Helsinki across the Gulf of Finland to Estonia.
