Port of South Louisiana Launches Drone Program to Enhance Security Measures

Monitoring the safety and security of the Port of South Louisiana’s extensive jurisdiction, including its sprawling 335-acre maritime industrial park, Globalplex, is no small feat. As a premier public terminal, Globalplex orchestrates the distribution, storage, and logistics of massive volumes of bulk, breakbulk, and containerized cargo, utilizing a variety of transport methods such as vessel, barge, truck, and rail. This intricate operation demands cutting-edge technology to ensure effective port management. Enter the Port of South Louisiana’s newly launched drone safety and security program, which has acquired two drones to bolster its security measures. This technology is set to redefine surveillance across the port’s jurisdiction, enhancing the safe and efficient movement of goods.

“The addition of drones is invaluable for the Port of South Louisiana, enabling us to monitor extensive areas, assess infrastructure in real-time, and enhance our security protocols,” said Paul Matthews, Chief Executive Officer. The port, the largest in Louisiana, grapples with unique challenges in ensuring safety throughout its vast facility. Traditional surveillance cameras, while useful, are often limited by their fixed positions. Drones, on the other hand, can cover expansive areas, capture aerial footage, and secure perimeters with ease. Programmed for continuous surveillance, these flying eyes can dramatically boost situational awareness, allowing security teams to make faster, more informed decisions.

Being the trailblazer in Louisiana, the Port of South Louisiana is pioneering a drone program that includes an autonomous drone for automated monitoring. This drone will handle daily surveillance remotely, streaming real-time footage directly to security personnel. Meanwhile, the second drone is ready for deployment during security or emergency situations, stationed on the Port’s 24/7 emergency response vessel. This dual approach not only enhances surveillance capabilities but also prepares the port for rapid response in critical situations.

The advantages of the drone program are vast and varied. In the event of safety or security incidents, drones can act as first responders, reaching the scene faster than personnel, providing crucial initial assessments. Their ability to navigate challenging terrains and high-risk areas allows for quick identification of potential hazards, enabling immediate action to protect human lives. With pre-programmed flight paths, these drones can monitor specific areas and be deployed across the entire jurisdiction as needed. The aerial footage they capture will help security personnel tailor their responses more effectively, thereby reducing response times and enhancing overall safety.

To ensure responsible use of these advanced tools, the Port of South Louisiana has instituted rigorous training for its personnel. Employees across various departments, including marine operations, security, maintenance, and business development, are gearing up to earn their Unmanned Aircraft General (UAG) Remote Pilot Certificate by passing the FAA’s aeronautical knowledge test. Alex Hernández, the Port’s Public Information Officer, is among those pursuing certification. “My role at the Port includes marketing, graphic design, and photography, so learning to operate drones aligns perfectly with my responsibilities. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to,” said Hernández. Maintaining certification requires ongoing training every 24 months, ensuring compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and U.S. Coast Guard standards. This commitment to continuous education reinforces the safe and skilled operation of drones in line with port security requirements.

With maritime shipping projected to remain a cornerstone of global trade—anticipating that up to three-quarters of goods will move by ship in the coming year—the significance of the Port of South Louisiana’s drone program cannot be overstated. Funding from FEMA’s Port Security Grant Program has made this initiative possible, reflecting the critical role that safe and efficient port operations play in national and economic security. The Port of South Louisiana is not just enhancing its security measures; it’s setting a precedent for the future of port operations, where technology and human expertise blend seamlessly to safeguard vital trade routes.
