EODev’s Hydrogen Fuel Cell Gets Green Light for Maritime Use

In a monumental stride towards a greener maritime landscape, EODev, the French innovator in hydrogen fuel cell solutions, has just snagged the coveted Type Approval Certification (TAC) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) for its REXH2® marine fuel cell system. This isn’t just a pat on the back for EODev; it’s a stamp of approval that positions the REXH2® as a serious contender in the race for clean energy propulsion in the maritime sector.

The REXH2®, built on Toyota’s state-of-the-art PEM fuel cell technology, is more than just a fancy gadget. It’s a scalable, “plug & play” power solution that ticks all the boxes for safety and performance, making it a no-brainer for maritime applications. With this certification, EODev joins an elite club of just three companies worldwide to receive such approval, setting the stage for a seismic shift in how we power our ships.

Yann Darmaillac, EODev’s Technical Director, didn’t mince words when he called the certification a “significant step toward making hydrogen a cornerstone of maritime decarbonization.” He’s spot on. This isn’t just about one company’s success; it’s about validating hydrogen as a reliable and safe alternative for the maritime industry, opening doors for deployment across a broader range of vessel types.

EODev’s fuel cell technology has already proven its mettle in several high-profile maritime projects. From powering the Bluegame Hydrogen Support Vessels (HSV) for the America’s Cup teams Orient Express Racing and American Magic to the recently launched training vessel Alba in Corsica, the REXH2® has shown it can deliver on its promises.

But the real game-changer is the PROMETEO project. This 24-meter passenger vessel, developed by Green Navy, is set to hit the waters of Brittany, carrying 200 passengers with zero emissions. Charles Cardi, CEO of Green Navy, couldn’t be more thrilled. “The REXH2® brings cutting-edge technology to the PROMETEO project, helping us to realize our vision for passenger vessels that meet environmental goals without compromising performance,” he said. This isn’t just a boat; it’s a statement—a testament to the power of innovation and sustainability.

So, what does this news mean for the future of the maritime industry? Well, for starters, it’s a wake-up call to traditional power solutions. Hydrogen fuel cells are no longer a pipe dream; they’re a viable, certified, and reliable alternative. This certification is a green light for more projects like PROMETEO, paving the way for a new era of clean, efficient, and sustainable maritime transport. It’s a shot across the bow for the industry to up its game, to challenge norms, and to embrace the future of clean energy. The maritime industry is at a crossroads, and EODev’s certification is a significant step towards a greener, more sustainable horizon.
