In a bold move that’s set to ripple through the maritime industry, Anglo-Eastern has unveiled a game-changer at its Maritime Academy in Karjat, Mumbai. The global maritime training powerhouse has installed a state-of-the-art LNG/Ammonia bunkering station skid, a first-of-its-kind facility in India. This isn’t just a new toy for the academy; it’s a clear signal that the industry is gearing up for a future where alternative marine fuels are the norm.
The unveiling, which took place during Anglo-Eastern’s 2025 Mumbai Conference, is more than just a flashy announcement. It’s a strategic investment in the future of maritime safety and environmental sustainability. The skid, equipped with the latest cryogenic fuelling technology and safety systems, offers a controlled environment for training in LNG and ammonia transfer operations, emergency response procedures, and regulatory compliance. It’s designed to replicate real-world bunkering operations, providing essential education and skill development for those working in the rapidly expanding field of alternative marine fuels.
Alexander Saverys, CEO at CMB.TECH, who inaugurated the facility, didn’t mince words. He toasted to “the future of shipping”, recognising that “we need more companies to step up and acknowledge the necessity to pursue such initiatives if we are to ensure adequate talent pools in the run-up to net zero emissions by 2050”. It’s a stark reminder that the maritime industry is at a crossroads, and companies like Anglo-Eastern are leading the charge towards a greener future.
Capt. Aalok Sharma, Group Director of Training at Anglo-Eastern, echoed this sentiment, stating that “we are thrilled to introduce this LNG/Ammonia bunkering station skid as part of our commitment to shaping the future of maritime fuel safety and efficiency. As the industry transitions toward sustainable fuels, the need for well-trained professionals has never been greater. This new facility will equip maritime personnel with the knowledge and hands-on experience required to meet the challenges of LNG and ammonia bunkering.”
The implications of this development are vast. As the maritime industry grapples with the transition to cleaner fuels, the demand for skilled professionals who can handle LNG and ammonia bunkering will skyrocket. Anglo-Eastern’s new facility is not just a training ground; it’s a beacon for the industry, setting a new standard for safety and efficiency in alternative marine fuels.
But Anglo-Eastern isn’t stopping at LNG and ammonia. The week also saw an addition to the Anglo-Eastern MAN PrimeServ training facility at Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC Mumbai) with the inauguration of a new ME GI Training facility. This new facility is built for Mk 2 ME GI engines and is capable of demonstrating important aspects of engine operations from which course participants will learn correct procedures for carrying out maintenance and safe operation of ME GI Engines onboard. This further strengthens Anglo-Eastern’s partnership with MAN Energy Solutions through the MAN PrimeServ Academy, which originated from an initial co-operation agreement to start MAN B&W Engine courses in Mumbai back in 2003.
This dual focus on alternative fuels and engine maintenance underscores Anglo-Eastern’s commitment to innovation, safety, and environmental responsibility. It’s a clear message to the industry: the future is here, and it’s time to get on board. The question now is, who will follow Anglo-Eastern’s lead? The maritime industry is at a tipping point, and initiatives like these could very well shape the future of shipping. As the industry transitions toward sustainable fuels, the need for well-trained professionals has never been greater. This new facility will equip maritime personnel with the knowledge and hands-on experience required to meet the challenges of LNG and ammonia bunkering.
