ABS is doubling down on digital training, snapping up Orka Informatics’ MetaSHIP simulator tech to supercharge its ABS Training Solutions division. This isn’t just an asset grab—it’s a strategic bet on gamified, data-driven learning as the future of maritime competency. The deal, pending Turkish approval, will bring MetaSHIP’s immersive vessel simulations and performance-tracking tools under ABS’ global umbrella, rolling them out across its training hubs in Qatar, Greece, and Singapore, as well as onboard ships and remote setups.
MetaSHIP isn’t your grandfather’s simulator. It’s a game-changer, blending realistic vessel operations with gamified training to sharpen seafarers’ skills without setting foot on a ship. The ODENES platform tracks progress and assessments, while the Navigational Skill and Behavioral Assessment module evaluates performance and decision-making. This isn’t just about ticking compliance boxes—it’s about building real-world competence in a rapidly evolving industry.
ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki nails it: “The maritime workforce must manage new technologies, hybrid systems, and complex regulations. Training that builds real competence, not just compliance, is essential for safety, sustainability, and competitiveness.” MetaSHIP’s creator, Levent Şen, echoes this sentiment, calling the acquisition “deeply rewarding” as it positions the tech for global scale under ABS’ leadership.
But ABS isn’t just buying tech—it’s building a team. Campbell Smith, fresh from Maersk Training, joins as Senior Vice President of ABS Training Solutions to lead the charge. Smith’s background in global maritime operations and training strategy will be critical as ABS integrates MetaSHIP into its portfolio and expands its advanced learning programs.
ABS President and COO John McDonald highlights the strategic vision: “Campbell’s appointment reflects our commitment to equipping the industry with the tools and insight needed to operate safely in an increasingly complex environment.” With Smith at the helm, ABS is poised to redefine maritime training, merging cutting-edge tech, safety, and innovation to prepare seafarers for the challenges ahead.
This acquisition isn’t just about scaling up—it’s about shaping the future of maritime education. By embedding gamified, data-driven training into its global footprint, ABS is setting a new standard for competency development. The question now is how quickly the industry will follow.
