Vietnam & Netherlands Launch Cutting-Edge Maritime Training Hub

In the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a new beacon of maritime education has been lit. On November 13, 2025, the University of Transport Ho Chi Minh City (UT) and the Dutch training group STC unveiled their joint venture, UT STC, with the inauguration of an advanced maritime training simulator system. This state-of-the-art facility is set to redefine practical training for Vietnamese seafarers, bridging the gap between local expertise and global standards.

The facility boasts two cutting-edge Dutch bridge simulators, offering immersive 240- and 360-degree views. These simulators incorporate a variety of vessel models and realistic scenarios, spanning both Vietnamese and international waterways. The center also houses a Kongsberg engine room simulator, which accurately replicates machinery spaces, control rooms, and high-voltage systems. Beyond these, the training facility includes simulators for cargo handling, Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Additionally, specialized areas for survival and firefighting training have been constructed, all in line with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) requirements.

Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Aukje de Vries, attended the inauguration and underscored the project’s significance. “This center symbolizes the enduring maritime collaboration between Vietnam and the Netherlands,” she stated. De Vries emphasized the Dutch government’s commitment to supporting technology transfer and training that meets international standards. “We are dedicated to continuing our support for initiatives that foster growth and excellence within Vietnam’s maritime sector,” she added.

The establishment of this maritime training center is poised to enhance practical training opportunities for students in Vietnam. By providing access to advanced simulators and realistic scenarios, the facility will enable the country to produce highly qualified seafarers who can meet the demands of the global shipping industry. This initiative exemplifies how international cooperation can lead to advancements in maritime education, ultimately fostering growth and excellence within Vietnam’s maritime sector.

The ripple effects of this collaboration are already being felt. The center’s advanced technology and comprehensive training programs are expected to attract students from across the region, positioning Vietnam as a hub for maritime education. Moreover, the facility’s adherence to STCW requirements ensures that graduates will be well-prepared to navigate the complexities of international shipping, further enhancing Vietnam’s standing in the global maritime community.

As the maritime industry continues to evolve, the need for highly skilled seafarers becomes increasingly critical. The inauguration of the UT STC maritime training simulator system marks a significant step forward in addressing this need. By combining Dutch expertise with Vietnamese ambition, the facility sets a new benchmark for maritime education, paving the way for a new generation of seafarers ready to take on the challenges of the global shipping industry.
