Qatar Advances Maritime Goals at IMO Assembly

At the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly in London, Qatar’s Minister of Transport, H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al-Thani, underscored the nation’s strategic focus on maritime development and environmental stewardship. Addressing the assembly, the Minister praised the IMO’s pivotal role in shaping global maritime transportation, enhancing safety and security, and protecting marine environments. He emphasized Qatar’s alignment with the IMO’s goals, highlighting the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve port efficiency, and develop national legislation in line with international standards.

The Minister pointed to significant strides in Qatar’s maritime industry, including the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Maritime Training and Simulation Center at the University of Doha for Science and Technology. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the center aims to prepare Qatari professionals to the highest global standards. “Protecting the marine environment has always been a cornerstone of Qatar’s national policies,” the Minister stated, emphasizing the belief that seas are not just trade corridors but natural and human legacies to be preserved for future generations.

To this end, Qatar has developed a national action plan to preserve marine resources and established a multidisciplinary committee focused on long-term planning and management of marine resources, aligning with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the United Kingdom and Ireland, H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani, also attended the session, reinforcing Qatar’s commitment to international maritime cooperation.

During the session, the Minister of Transport engaged in bilateral meetings with several key figures, including HE UK Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander, HE Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias, and HE Minister of Transport and Aviation of the Republic of Sierra Leone Haji Vandi Turay. Additionally, he met with HE High Commissioner of Barbados to the United Kingdom Oral Holder and HE First Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine Alona Ivanivna Shkrum. These meetings focused on enhancing cooperation in transport, maritime navigation, ports, and related services, underscoring Qatar’s proactive approach to global maritime partnerships.

This strategic engagement at the IMO Assembly highlights Qatar’s commitment to advancing maritime safety, sustainability, and international collaboration. As the nation continues to invest in cutting-edge technology and training, it sets a precedent for other countries to follow in the pursuit of a more secure and environmentally responsible maritime future.
