Capt. Mehta Steers Adani Ports to New Horizons

Capt. Sandeep Mehta, President of Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having spent over four decades in the maritime industry. His journey, from a seafarer to a key figure in port management and infrastructure development, is a testament to his expertise and leadership.

Capt. Mehta’s career began on the high seas, where he quickly rose through the ranks to command some of the largest merchant carrier vessels of his time. After 12 years of sailing, he transitioned to shore-based roles, taking on senior positions in the container shipping industry. His tenure in this highly competitive sector honed his skills in supply chain and international logistics, bulk and container port operations, and global liner shipping.

A pivotal moment in Capt. Mehta’s career came when he joined the Adani Group as President and CEO of Mundra Ports and SEZ. Under his leadership, Mundra Port transformed from a minor player into India’s largest private port, expanding its operations to include container terminals, bulk, liquid, and automobile logistics. His responsibilities extended to developing container terminals, private rail operations, container freight stations, inland container depots, and grain storage facilities for the Adani Group across India.

His strategic vision and operational excellence were further demonstrated during his tenure as CEO for Adani Ports in Australia. There, he was part of the core management team tasked with executing the Adani Group’s integrated mine, rail, and port development projects, including significant port expansions.

Currently, Capt. Mehta oversees business development activities for Adani Ports and its overseas port projects. His extensive experience and deep understanding of the maritime and logistics sectors have been instrumental in driving these initiatives forward.

Capt. Mehta’s commitment to professional development is evident in his pursuit of specialized courses in shipping and transport. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Ship Brokers in London and the Company of Master Mariners, and he also serves as a Loss Assessor & Surveyor. Beyond his professional roles, Capt. Mehta is an avid writer, focusing on issues related to the maritime and supply chain industries. He is a regular speaker at business and industry forums and has been invited as a guest lecturer by various management institutes.

In his spare time, Capt. Mehta is passionate about mentoring young people and helping them develop their skills.
